The lower lobe contains the left and middle lobes, which are connected to the left and right bronchi, the smaller tubes that carry air into the lung. The lungs are surrounded by the diaphragm, a muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. They are responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide through the process of respiration.
