The flag of India is a horizontal rectangular flag with the national emblem, a symbol of a four-armed goddess, in the center. The goddess has three hands and each hand holds a lotus flower. The background of the flag is saffron yellow and the edges of the flag are black and white. There is a horizontal strip at the bottom of the flag that has the same saffron yellow color as the background, but is not as wide as the flag. The flag has a white vertical band at the top that has the words "Satyameva Jayate" in Hindi. These words mean "Truth alone triumphs." The flag was adopted on August 31, ,It is commonly referred to as the Tiranga (Saffron Flag) and is a symbol of India's independence. The flag is flown on government buildings and other public places.
